Almost all aspects of good Magick (and I use the term “good” as in quality, not the outcome of a spell) require 4 key skills; focus, clarity, visualisation and will.
These 4 key skills flow into each other as you manage to master each one, below I will list each skill and exercises on how you can achieve this.
The main method with which to do Magick is through a state of heightened awareness. We can gain this through meditation and train all of the skills while practicing this. In turn, training each skill in order you will develop the correct mental state with which to cast and weave.
FocusThe first skill to train and the easiest way to do this is with a candle.
Sit comfortably (preferably cross legged) in front of the flame, make sure you can look into it but that is isn’t to close to burn you and that your far enough away so your not straining your neck.
A candle is best as you can turn off the lights and it makes the focusing easier, however you can actually do it with another object or even a spot on the wall/ceiling etc. You don’t even have to sit down if you’re using a spot on the ceiling, you can just lay down and this might be a more preferable option when you advance and get more comfortable with focusing on a single object.
ClarityAs you focus on the flame, or object. Clear you mind, do not forcibly throw thoughts from your head. Instead just let them flow through, your thoughts are like water and no matter what you place to hold it back eventually it will burst like a dam. Let it flow, let everything flow and remove the obstacles within you mind.
It is amazing how much we fight our own thoughts during the day. Blocks we put up so we can deal with the situation at hand, but this is not the way Magick is done and we need to be true to ourselves. This time you take to practice is your time to be free from burden, see all that you block simply flow through your mind and out again as you continue to keep focus on flame/object.
If something lingers on your mind while doing this then allow it to, do not force it out. Let it stay, if it doesn’t fade within a few minuets then assess the issue and try to reason with it. You can talk to your mind and it will answer, you already know the answers to your own problems so simply ask. Once it has moved on you should eventually be left with nothing…not the thought or complexity of nothing but nothing.
VisualisationIf you can grasp the previous concept, clearing your mind then you can move onto training the next skill. Visualisation will require you to close your eyes in your early stages and it is well advisable to do so even when you are more experienced (although I wont deny it is possible to do so without).
Close your eyes and try to hold your focus and keep the clarity of your mind….if it slips go back to the stage you fell at and try again. Some of you at this point may be thinking this is easy but you are very wrong. There are many out there who find this hard and it is most likely because they are doing it correctly and not lying to their own mind. I can’t stress enough that once your eyes are closed you need to attain the same as what you did with your eyes open, unless you can do this your mind will betray you at some point in the future which can dangerous.
Once you manage to reach this level start with easy exercises. With your eyes closed, visualise a white square on a black background. If your mind slips and you begin to think other things when doing this then clear your head and start again.
WillNow to train your will, using only your mind you should spin the square, rotate it faster and faster, watch its corners closely and see them blur as the spinning square becomes a circle. Then slow it, slow the square and watch them reappear, if they do not and your square remains a circle (as it sometimes does) begin again and remember that it is a square in motion, not a transformation into a circle.
